There are many reasons homeowners may decide its time for a roof fascia replacement such as rusted fascia, incorrect leveling or renovations or maybe your sick and tired of repainting your fascia. What ever the reason we will go into some important facts about fascia replacement and when its time to be replaced.

Fascia plays an important structural role in that it prevents the edges of your (tile or tin) roof from touching the roof rafters. Fascia also secures your eaves and roof’s guttering system to it , to ensure that rainwater from your roof drains properly and furthermore roof fascia creates a barrier and prevents moisture from entering the roofline.

Metal and Wooden Fascia

Overflowing gutters cause damage to the metal and wood Fascia leading to premature rusting. When overflowing is not addressed immediately and water continiously gets into the eaves it soaks the wooden rafters which hold the metal fascia support brackets. These brackets then can become rusted or loose and the fascia can begin to come apart from other components of the roof resulting in detached fascia and sagging gutters
Fascia supports your tile or tin roof as well as your gutters so when they are rusted you have an unsafe roof with risk of your eaves, fascia, roof tiles or gutters potentially collapsing. Rusted roof fascia is a clear sign that there is a problem with your roof rainwater system. At this stage there is no choice the fascia must be replaced as it is a structural support for your gutters and roof.

Wooden fascia can suffer from wet rot when water gets into the wood either through lack of painting maintenance or again overflowing due to blockage of insufficient drainage downpipes in heavy rain periods. Unlike metal fascia brackets, wooden fascia is nailed directly into the rafters so when there is overflowing into the eaves the nails that hold the wooden fascia to the rafters become loose and the fascia detaches. Do not walk anywhere near detached fascia as you can sustain serious injury.

Do my gutters need to be replaced when i replace my fascia

When replacing roof fascia all the existing house gutters must be removed in order to access and change the existing fascia.
Installing new gutters during a fascia replacement is generally the right process. However some home owners replace there rain gutters and a few years later come to realise its time to replace there fascia.

When this situation occurs there are a few things to consider.

Although your existing gutters can be removed and reinstalled there are some factors that must be considered
Each gutter piece removed will have one or all of the following cut or joined to them :

Each piece of existing gutter removed will now have to have both ends where the gutter joins or gutter corners were siliconed to it cut completely off as you can not reuse or rejoin that part of the gutter again. well at least not a full house worth otherwise the cost to clean each and every join will be huge as its very time consuming This will significantly reduce the existing gutter pieces and if a downpipe was installed on any of those existing gutter pieces you will have to cut either side of the gutter where the downpipe join was reducing that piece of gutter again to two smaller pieces. Now when these existing gutter reductions are completed to all existing gutter pieces you are left with lots of smaller gutter lengths which although can be re used they wont look pretty when mixed with brand new colorbond gutter that will be required to fill in the gutter reductions and even worse than that is the fact that its a professional gutter installers job and when i say job i mean “DuTY” is to minimise gutter joins for you and by adamantly insisting on reusing pre installed guttering your actually increasing the amount of gutter joins on your home. So down one side of your house you now have six gutter joins instead of three ! Not a good idea.

One good thing about this situation though is that it actually works in your favor because the professional knows this and when put in this situation you generally get a ReallY good discount to help persuade you to replace all the gutters as it benefits the professional also because there installation job will look more professional and function more professionally and they will also save a lot of time on installation with less joins.
